Our Volunteers: Kevin Manley

Kevin ManleyI was always inquisitive and thrill seeking, and enjoyed experimenting with drugs and crime during my teenage years in Cardiff. However, things escalated over time and I eventually ended up addicted to heroin and crack cocaine, homeless and hopeless. In 2005 I ended up in hospital for nine months, waiting for a hip replacement operation and battling my addiction.

Not long after, I became a Christian and in January 2006 went to a Christian rehab house in Cardiff called Livingstones. It hasn’t all been plain sailing but I’m now drug free and my faith in God has given me the strength and support I’ve needed to change.

I volunteer with WIRED and enjoy working on a range of projects, including, filming my personal stories, visiting treatment agencies, giving talks to professionals and offering my views on everything! I’ve also appeared on ITV and BBC news, sharing my experiences of recovery and overdose.

Q & A session: Methadone

Find out more about my experiences of methadone and the role it played in my recovery.
